In my 3rd grade class I use SLANT for negative and tally marks for positive.
How SLANT works is students lose SLANT marks if they are not
S- sitting up
L- looking and listening
A-asking and answering questions
N-nodding and taking notes
T-tracking the teacher.
Each Slant mark has a consequence tied. For example deduction of free time or recess time. In third grade each SLANT is -5 minutes of recess. Three slant marks the student must write about their behavior and leave the class for a time out. At 4 a parent will be contacted, and 5 will be removal from class to the office
Another way to manage older students would be : One is a warning. Two is a time out in the break area. Three slant marks the student must write about their behavior and take a time out in the break area. At 4 a parent will be contacted, and 5 will be removal from class to the office. Students have a SLANT sheet on their desk. You can also give a citizenship grade for this and have parents sign it. Out of 25 points.
Tally marks- Tally marks are positive behavior rewards. Any time I see a student being an exemplar student doing the SLANT I give a tally mark. The kids compete with each other and there is no need for any buying of prizes. I have students put a post it on their desk and that’s how they keep track of their points.
