Can students blend the sounds together to make a word?

This Spring and/or Easter phonological awareness activity is great for teachers and speech-language pathologists working with young children that are developing an understanding of basic letter sounds.

The following words (with P,B,T,D,N,M,K,G,H,CH sounds) are included:

egg

hide

chick

knock

hunt

paint

empty

happy

bunny

hatch

hen

kite

Instructions for printable version:

Cut along the dotted line. Give the bottom sheet to the student. Say each sound for the words above and ask students to blend the sounds together to make a word that describes something in the spring scene. Ask them to say the word aloud and color the appropriate picture.

SLP Tip:

Use jelly beans or pom-poms to help students visualize the segmentation of each sound. Push the jelly beans or pom-poms together to represent the blending of each sound.
