Description for full unit below!

Target the fourth tier of the language processing hierarchy with your older students using this categorization and classifying unit!

After mastering the ability to name/label objects, demonstrate knowledge of their function, and develop knowledge of a variety of words and concepts associated with them, students are ready to begin identifying and stating category labels for items. This allows students to appropriately group items, forming the basis for future skills including recognizing similarities and differences and providing multiple meanings and is key to being able to complete analogies.

This unit was designed with older students in mind, using black & white text as stimuli without visual aids. A variety of activities are available, including sorting cards, worksheets, and task cards. Activities require both closed-ended answer and open-ended answers to target both expressive and receptive knowledge of categorization.

- Sorting cards (10 words per each of the 26 categories) --- sort words into the correct category

- Matching cards (10 category labels + definitions) --- match category labels (fruit, furniture, etc...) to their definition

- Choose the Right Answer Worksheet (6) ---- an answer bank of category labels used to classify the word lists in each of 10 sentences + an answer bank of items used to replace the item of the same category in each of 10 sentences

- Give Me the Right Answer Worksheet (5) --- identify whether a stated object/category label is true or false

- Fill in the Blank (6) --- 1. Complete a sentence with the appropriate category label for a list of 3 objects 2. Complete a sentence with a 3rd example of a category label

- Compare/Contrast (5) --- Compare and contrast 2 similar objects of different categories

- Narrative Writing (1) --- Write a story using examples of 5 given category labels

- Task Cards (18) --- 1. Identify if a stated category label/object relationship is true or false 2. Answer yes/no to a category label/object relationship 3. State the category label of a given object

- Category Sticky Note Answers --- A selection of category label cards are provided for students to list examples of using their sticky notes. Then, take turns discussing the answers as a group!
