Instructions:

Materials:
1. Cereal in ziplock bag
2. Clean sheet of paper or paper towel
3. Pencil

You will need cereal and a clean sheet of paper towel to do this activity. Fold the paper in half and mark a line down the middle to separate the two sides.

For example:

2 + __ = 1 + 4

Students will first add the right side, because it is not missing a number.
They will pull out 1 cereal, then 4 more, and add them together.
They now have 5 pieces of cereal on the right side of the mat.
Students will then pull out 2 more pieces of cereal from the ziplock bag and place on the left side of the mat.
Now how many pieces do you need to make both sides equal?
