This assignment can be used for any grade* and any novel study; in fact, I have used it in grades 9-12 with great success. Its adaptability is in its opportunity for students to think creatively and critically while ensuring close reading occurs too.
The assignment asks students to analyze one character from the novel they're studying by creating a physical drawing, providing direct evidence from the novel, and thinking critically about who the character "really" is. Through short but essential written components students demonstrate their understanding of one character.
Rubric included based on three strands of learning: Reading and Literature Studies, Writing, and Media.
* with a slight tweak to the rubric it could be used in middle school too.
