This FREE set of student comprehension self-assessment posters is the perfect thing for teaching your students to be reflective after they have learned new information. I hope they are a valuable tool for you.
Display these four cards in a prominent place in the classroom. After teaching a new concept, have the students do a reflective self-assessment of how well they understand the material. Have them tell you their title (“Expert, Practitioner, Apprentice, or Novice”) or hold up the number of fingers (1-4) for their level of comprehension. This allows you to informally assess whether or not you need to reteach a concept before moving on to the next topic.
You can choose to have the students close their eyes (for privacy) and hold up the fingers for you to see. Sometimes I would also have the students write their comprehension number in the bottom corner of a worksheet, quiz, or test to give me an idea of how well they think they understand the material.
