Teaching students how to communicate with each other is important in any classroom. This resource includes a variety of ideas for discussion, providing opportunities for students to develop and practice the habits of good speakers and listeners. I use these conversation starters during Morning Meeting, but they’re also great for those times when you have a few minutes before recess or lunch. I like to set the expectation for students to continue the discussion until I tell them, “Time’s up!”, teaching them how to make eye contact with each other, add on to each other’s responses, make connections, and support their ideas with reasons and examples.
Ideas for use:
- During Morning Meeting
- While studying nonfiction topics
- End of day wrap up discussions
- As writing prompts
- As research ideas
- With ESL groups
This resource pairs nicely with my Speaking and Listening resource HERE
