"Number Families" is a great group game to build the concept of equivalence and a single number having multiple forms. This version of Number Families reinforces the various forms of decimals through the thousandths place: standard form, word form, and two types of expanded form.
To play the game, every student receives a card and finds the rest of their "family". When students are in groups, they go around their small circles and explain how they know each number fits in the family.
Example of a Number Family:
-nine and twelve thousandths
-9 + 0.01 + 0.002
-(9 x 1) + (1 x 1/100) + (2 x 1/1000)
This lesson is perfect for 5th grade, but could also be used as a decimal review game for 6th or 7th grade.
