Want to really teach your students a lesson? This is just one of those small teacher pranks with a serious message behind it: follow directions! If the students do, they know to read the entire thing and to then only write their names and turn in their papers. If they don’t read everything first, as directed, well, they get stuck answering silly questions and feeling a bit embarrassed.
One of my high school teachers gave me something similar on the last day of school decades ago. Thinking I was smart, I was furious to see classmates turning in their papers after just a minute or two. Now, I use it on my 5th grade students, but have played the “gotcha” on unsuspecting teens and adults too.
I use this on the first day of school, and although I teach gifted and high achieving students, haven’t had one student who read through the quiz first. I’d rather they get the message at the very start of the school year, so they understand the importance of it throughout our time together. Yes, they feel a bit silly, but not as bad as they would if they blew it on real assignments and tests.
