This is a sample of the pages in the Fry Sight Word Safari. The complete set is designed to provide practice with Fry Sight Words 1-100.
Ten check lists, each with 10 words, are included along with a master recording sheet for the first 100 Fry Sight Words. Five class checklists (each for 20 words/2 lists) are provided.
Each list of 10 words has its own animal mascot. When all 10 words on a list are checked by the teacher, the student colors the jungle animal on the word list and on the master list.
Award Certificates for each list are included.
Sight word flash cards are provided – 4 per page.
One word work sheet is included for each word.
For organization, all word work sheets and flash cards are marked with the corresponding mascot animal.
In creating this set of sight word cards and word work, I have intentionally not numbered the words or lists which allows you to introduce the words in any order that suits your class or the individual student.
Every word work page has the same basic activities. Activities include visual discrimination, determining vowels and consonants, tracing/writing the word, word configuration fill-ins, identifying the word, and sequencing the letters of the word (fill in the blank and cut-and-paste). The activities are geared toward creating a visual memory of the word thus building fluency and spelling skills. In order to reinforce visual memory, there are no misspelled or made up words used in the packet. (Studies have shown that seeing a word misspelled in print can confuse visual memory.) All of the words in the “circle the word” boxes are real and are similar to the target word in some way. The student must look at every letter to determine if it is the target word.
The sentences for the target words are not “easy” sentences. There are simple, compound and complex sentences. Statements, commands, exclamations, and questions are included. Often, the target word (or one that looks similar) occurs more than once in the sentence making it necessary for the student to look at the complete sentence, not just find the word and quit. Some of the sentences will lend themselves to extension activities.
“The boy likes the little brown dog.” may be extended by asking the student to draw a picture that matches the words. (adjectives)
“What happens when oil and water are mixed?” can be the basis of predictions and experiments.
