This game is part of my full Activities, Actions, and Verbs Vocabulary unit for ELL newcomers. The pack is full of activities to introduce and review common activities and verbs ESL/EFL/ELL students need to learn with engaging pictures and a variety of activities to practice. You can find the full pack here:
We play this game to practice critical thinking skills and explaining our thinking. Choose four pictures to put in the boxes, three which go together and one that doesn’t. For example, choose three cards with boys and one with a girl. Ask students to point to the one that doesn’t belong, and depending on their English proficiency ask them to explain why not. Students love this game because they can participate even with very limited English proficiency: an explanation of “boy, boy, boy, girl” shows what they know and let’s them communicate with the vocabulary they have.
These activities can easily be used in literacy centers or as part of a unit plan for teaching activities words to your newcomers.
