Hands-On Activities for Classifying Triangles ACCOUNTABLE TALK TEST PREP
HOW TO USE THIS FREEBIE:
Organize your students in groups – I want to generate discussions and accountable talk amongst my students with this activity. Each group is given a set of quadrilaterals and asked to complete the chart listing characteristics of each shape.
Have a chart ready to go – I put my chart on the active board. Once all groups are done categorizing the quadrilaterals, I appoint some individuals to go up and fill in the letters representing shapes for each column of the chart. I will purposely select students/groups with incorrect answers to generate debates and discussions.
Debate time – I then give my students a certain about of time to critique the filled out chart.
Friendly critiques – Finally, we analyze what is wrong with the chart and fix the misconceptions. All corrections are STUDENT LED.
These activities are meant to build conceptual understanding – After we discuss the characteristics of each quadrilateral I then ask my students to create a graphic organizer to show the similarities and differences between the shapes. I tell them that they can only use one copy of each shape. They productively struggle with finding a way to have a quadrilateral “be in more than one place.” After some time, I then provide them with the Venn diagram included in this product. This diagram has NO labels. Again, I want them to debate and discuss with their group members on how to label the Venn diagram. Some groups can complete this within time, while others cannot. I provide clues along the way.
TAKE YOUR TIME! – These activities take us 2 days to complete. The last chart requires deep thinking and I never rush this process.
