It is challenging to find time to adequately address our students' fluency needs once they reach middle school. Therefore, I used the technology in PowerPoint to create a program that I use with my students.
Within this program, students have the option of listening to a story before the fluency work begins. Then they must read the words before they disappear off of the screen. The students select either the red speed (slow), medium speed (yellow), or fast speed (green). They are sure to improve upon their reading fluency and comprehension with this program!
This fourth installment uses the story of Snow-White. I chose this fairy tale for a few reasons:
1. Students must be familiar with fairy tales so that they understand allusions to fairy tales in other literary works.
2. The lexile of the story is 1000, which is a 7th grade level. The reading passage is complex enough to challenge students. However, most students are familiar with the story of Snow-White, so they will be able to comprehend the harder text.
