Mandala means circle in Sanskrit. Circles are a powerful symbol found in many cultures and in our environment. We see them in halos, prayer wheels, and other religious symbols, architecture, and nature. Mandalas have been used for a long time to facilitate meditation as they help to center the body and mind. Coloring a mandala can be seen as a form of active meditation which can help children deal with their emotions as well as calm them from the constant stimulation of our modern world. By focusing on only coloring the mandala, your student stays present in the moment and begins redirect all his or her thoughts on that one activity, which is the basis of meditation. Thoughts are quieted as they begin to focus only about which color they will use next to create their masterpiece. Mindful awareness exercises help children develop concentration and self-awareness. This mindfulness, especially when practiced daily, is known to reduce anxiety and stress from a racing mind.
