Information Regarding Guided Reading Levels - Parent Handout

This Parent Handout is designed to clarify what Guided Reading Levels ARE for, and also What they're NOT for.

The information, as presented to parents, follows.


In selecting books for students, educators use a system of reading levels.

Please Note: Reading levels do not define readers. They are a tool to help us pick books that the reader is likely to experience success with in that stage of their development.

From day to day, your child will read books at different levels. Some of the reasons are listed below.

The level of support a student receives will affect the level of text they are successful with.

At times, the class may chorally read a passage to learn content or focus on specific skills. Because everyone, including the teacher, is reading aloud together, the student is highly supported. Text at a higher level than the child’s independent level can be accessed in this way.

In reading groups, a child may be introduced to new words or word features prior to reading a particular book. This helps provide scaffolding, preparing the student to experience success reading a book that might otherwise have been difficult for him or her. (I will vary the levels used in reading groups somewhat to enable students to fluently read some books, and to provide specific challenges while reading other books.)

If a child is picking a book to read independently, without an adult to support him or her, it may be best to select a book at a slightly lower level. (This is so the child can enjoy the text, without getting stuck on many words.)

We do NOT say a student is a Level D Reader. This could be limiting to the child. As I provide information, however, I will discuss ways to support students as they read books at a certain reading level or range. These levels are an organizational tool for adults, and should be used flexibly.

Knowing the range of levels your child is reading at a particular time can help as you select books for your child. Many librarians are familiar with Guided Reading Levels, and may be able to make suggestions based on a combination of your child’s interests and approximate reading level.
