I am a big fan of math journals. I love that students look for things to add to their journals as they experience the math around them.
Number of the day is a favourite activity of mine. Put up a number every day at the beginning of class (great bell work) using the included number cards. They can be arranged and rearranged to make whatever numbers your students are working on. You might even have two different numbers (challenge and super-challenge) to differentiate in your room.
Choose a few cards for students to work with the number you give them that day. It’s helpful for students to see it in action for the first few weeks of school. Do one or two together every day and have them record it in their journals. They can go back and peek at it if they need a reminder. Then slowly have them work independently. Let’s say at the beginning of September I do number of the day with them and as a class we do “write in words” and “draw using base ten”. Another day I might choose to do “represent using tally marks” as a class and then have them “draw using base ten” on their own.
These cards are suitable for grades 2-5, and therefore are useful for differentiating your Number of the Day work as well. Encourage students to see the numbers around them and add new ways to represent the number of the day using the blank cards included.
Included with this document are 27 unique and fun ideas to bring life (and critical thinking) to Number of the Day work and get students EXCITED!
