About the video Out of Many, One

Out of Many, One is a Netflix-produced short documentary lasting about 30 minutes. It is currently available on the Netflix streaming service and since it is their own production, I would expect it to remain available there for a significant time to come.

  • The video shows students what it is like to prepare for the U.S. citizenship test that immigrants must take in order to become naturalized U.S. citizens.
  • The video also presents a wealth of information about the experiences of immigrants in the United States: why they came to this country and why they want to become citizens.
  • The video starts and ends with short snippets from citizenship oath ceremonies and includes a short speech from two federal judges including U.S. Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I have used the video in class at a range of grade levels, using it to illustrate world cultures as well as the U.S naturalization process. I believe it can readily be incorporated into topics studied in social studies classes at any grade level 7th through 12th, making it a versatile addition to many school curricula.

INCLUDED IN THIS OUT OF ONE, MANY WORKSHEET AND VIDEO GUIDE

I’ve tried to provide teachers with a range of options for incorporating the video into their social studies classes. Depending on your particular learning standards and the needs of your students, you may want to use only one of the several activities. If you use all of them, I believe you could easily transform the video into a mini-unit on immigration and citizenship in 21st century America.

In the pages that follow, you will find:

  • A note-taking chart for students to use as they watch the video. This will help them keep track of two key types of information presented.
  • A student worksheet with 24 free-answer questions. Many of these are objective in nature, with a clearly defined correct answer, but many are subjective, asking students to identify and defend their opinions on a range of issues related to the content presented in the video.
  • A student project list with 7 suggested follow-up projects students can complete to deepen their understanding of issues raised by the video.
  • Detailed answer keys for the note-taking sheet and 24 free answer questions
  • Teaching notes to help with project implementation

This resource is provided free of charge to anyone who wants to try using it. Please keep in mind, however, that Out of Many, One is available at this time only on the Netflix streaming service. You will need a subscription to Netflix in order to use this resource as intended.
