November is Picture Book Month, an international literacy initiative designed to engage children in reading a diversity of picture books. This free guide by educational consultant Marcie Colleen has great ideas and activities to celebrate! The guide focuses on using picture books to enhance the ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies curricula. The activities can be used with a wide variety of texts and include The Geometry of Illustration, The Secret Message Code game, Text-plorers, Fact vs. Fiction game, Collective Drawing, and This is My Story. A list of links and helpful resources is included.
I was honored to be selected as a Picture Book Month Champion for 2014. Every day in November, a different author or illustrator will post about "Why Picture Books are Important" at this link.
Specific ideas for using one of their books in the classroom are in the posts. Previous Champions include Rosemary Wells, Jon Scieszka, and Jerry Pinkney.
