FEBRUARY Reading Comprehension IEP GOAL SKILL BUILDER (Sharing and Caring) - A Free Special Education Resource

On February 14th, 2018, on Valentine’s Day, our small community of Parkland, Florida, was turned upside down by a tragedy so reprehensible, that so needlessly took 17 innocent lives in just minutes. But, it is not just the lives lost, but those families who deal with missing their sons, daughters, or fathers every single day. It is watching the children who were injured, but luckily survived, and saw more than anyone should ever see in their lifetime. It is listening to a parent speak about what it is like for their son, who will forever hold physical and emotional scars.

I live and teach in Parkland, Florida. The outpouring of love and support from around the country was astonishing. Banners sent from schools and students from coast to coast are still hugging the fence surrounding the building where most of the fatalities occurred. The building is no longer occupied, and eventually it will be replaced by a monument dedicated to the 17 students and teachers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

With the two year anniversary approaching, our community is spending this Valentine’s Day, with remembrance ceremonies and acts of kindness. Please share this 17 page free learning activity for February with your children. It focuses on sharing, caring, and tolerance of others.

May this Valentine’s Day be filled with love, warmth, and kindness.

For those of you who would like a suggestion for an IEP Goal for this activity, here are a couple:

1. Given an instructional level reading passage, STUDENT will _________(independently/with prompts) read and mark the correct response out of a field of up to four possible answer choices, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

2. Given a reading passage read aloud by STUDENT (or the teacher), STUDENT will describe what is occurring in the picture and state the act of kindness shown, in order to provide correct responses to four questions, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

Thank you so very much.
