The following assessment is aligned with the common core standards for Reading Literature in 9th and 10th grade.
This free copy is a sample of the full test.
Included in the free sample: test questions 1- 5, answer key, and a sample data collection chart.
This common core assessment uses the questions that will mock the EOC - English II Exam. Therefore this will be a good assessment to offer students some exposure to that test.
The questions come from the Reading Literature standards and focus on characterization, text structure, meaning and purpose of words or phrases, and theme. Characterization involves giving a character traits based on their actions, thoughts, description, reactions, and interactions with others. Text structure involves determining if the text is cause and effect, chronological, persuasive, compare and contrast, etc. The questions on meaning of words focus on determining whether the student can correctly replace the word with another similar word or give a definition for the word. The questions on theme include determining an objective summary of the text. That objective summary loosely reflects the theme of the passage by showing what the characters go through and what they learn.
The data collection sheet is a sheet I include with all of my tests to help the students track their own mastery of goals and objectives.
The students determine how well they did on each type of question (type: characterization, theme, vocabulary, and text structure).
Each data collection sheet is unique to the test. These are also good artifacts for teachers and shows that the teacher is helping the student be accountable for their own learning, for setting and tracking goals, and for tracking what areas need to be retaught.
