Description

Snag this critical thinking activity where students practice analyzing, inferring, and observing real-life science in photographs. Students also notice key details while utilizing science vocabulary. The goal is for students to observe science in our everyday lives.

You can read more about how I use this critical thinking activity in the classroom on my blog: Science Picture of the Day Freebie at The Owl Teacher Blog.

This product meets the Common Core standards of RI.1 (Inference, Key Details and Informational Text) along with SL.2 and 4 (Key discussion and use of vocabulary). Further, this is a great way to get your students to think deeper and more critically with this open-ended activity.

Other Buyers Have Said:

"Wow! After looking over this freebie, I decided that I need to use it on Pi Day. My student will be reading about Albert Einstein and your pictures remind me of how he looked at the world. If our kids begin looking at the world with science eyes as students, then who knows what they can accomplish when they become adults. Thanks!" (Thank you, Digging Deep to Soar Beyond the Text!)

"This is an awesome idea to promote scientific thinking!" (Thank you, Linda M.!)

"My students love this type of activity. They then find pictures in magazines or the internet and create their own inferred science challenge." (Thank you, Nancy M.!)

Final Notes:

All pictures print best in color, but, of course, they will print just fine in grayscale.

I have provided an answer key for each picture prompt, but the science seen in these pictures is not limited to my answers, as there are many aspects of science in our daily lives. Be sure to have students justify their reasoning, and how deep you go with the science concepts is at your discretion.

If you see ANYTHING that needs modifying, or if you have any questions, please contact me via the Q&A. I take my product creation and your satisfaction very seriously! Thanks!

Don’t Miss Out!

These prompts can be used daily like a “picture of the day” activity, as morning work, as a science warm-up, as a science center, as science homework, or even as an activity for an early finisher.
