THIS LESSON INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL STORY ABOUT THOMAS O'MALLY, WHO COUNTS WITH TALLY'S!

Included within this FREE math resource is an original story called Thomas O’Mally, Countin’ With Tally’s. This story is about a shepherd that needs to count his sheep for shearing, and was designed to introduce students to working word problems with both tally marks and numbers. Students are shown how needed information can be pulled from a text to answer simple questions about quantity. The information that is pulled from the short story is then transformed by the student into graphs and numerical forms.

Within the comprehensive math resource (Found in our TPT store) that the above story is a part of is an introduction for students to counting and graphing by Tally Marks.

The introductory sheets of this lesson show the student a step-by-step process of
how to use tally marks, and how that information is then transferred into a chart and
graph. Each sheet is designed to be a stand alone worksheet for ease of
assessment, or can be utilized as a week long unit. (When I taught this in my
resource room, it turned into a two week unit lesson)

· This tally mark lesson also teaches the student to group by fives, and how to count-
on with the use of visuals with step-by-step instructions.

· This lesson introduces the student to charting and graphing. Utilizing easy to
understand visuals that help to them to better understand the graphing process.

· Each page is a themed worksheet that can be done on an individual basis
(dependent on the students level), or through teacher modeling.

· This Tally Mark lesson also introduces the student to counting by 2’s, 4’s, 5’s, and
10’s.

· This is all done while using tally marks that then introduces them to the numbering
system and basic math terminology.

· Included within this math resource is an original story called Thomas O’Mally,
Countin’ With Tally’s. This story is about a shepherd that needs to count his sheep
for shearing, and was designed to introduce students to working word problems
with both tally marks and numbers. Students are shown how needed information
can be pulled from a text to answer simple questions about quantity. The
information that is pulled from the short story is then transformed by the student into
graphs and numerical forms. The theme of counting sheep continues into simple
addition and subtraction sheets that are packed full of visual counting problems to
help solidify the students knowledge.
