This is a fun, engaging resource to utilize around Thanksgiving! It allows students to create their own quilt squares that show an item or items that they are thankful for. Although my students really enjoyed making their own quilt squares, they LOVED hearing about what items their classmates were thankful for. It was so exciting to watch the classroom community continue to grow with each passing presentation!
There is a writing activity, as well as a guided reading resource based on the book "The Patchwork Path: A Quilt Map to Freedom," by Bettye Stroud. The book tells the story of how slaves once used quilt squares to learn the path of the Underground Railroad. This product includes a wonderful piece to help students build comprehension during their reading, and it ties nicely into the classroom quilt.
