Using visual support cards for students new to English is a valuable way to aid communication if new arrivals who have little English and are in the 'silent period'.
1. Laminate the two pages for durability.
2. Cut round cards and puncture a hole where there is a circle.
3. Select the cards to be used and thread a cord or strung through the holes so that they are kept together.
If the parents have some English, the cards could be sent home, so that the parents can help to clarify the meanings of the pictorial representations and explain that they can be shown to the teacher and others to explain feelings, needs etc.
