This is a list of word tackling strategies your students can keep handy when reading their "just right books". Includes the following:
Check the picture
Look at the first letter
Look at the last letter
Get your mouth ready to say the first sound
Read through the word (sound it out)
Look for a smaller word inside the bigger one
Chunk it: break it into parts you know
Look for familiar beginnings and endings
Think, “Can this letter make two sounds?” Try a different sound.
Skip it and go back
Check your reading (Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense?)
Reread: Go back and read the sentence again
...along with visuals next to the strategies to help remind early readers.
