Time for a brain break! The goal of this puzzle is to construct the shape of a capital letter “T”. It should be simple, since there are only four pieces and students can easily identify possible positions where some of them should be placed. However, a 1997 study showed that few people are able to solve it in under five minutes [Youtube Preview], with most people needing more than half an hour.

Tiling puzzles are puzzles in which a number of flat shapes have to be assembled into a larger given shape. The objective is to replicate a pattern (given only an outline) generally found in a puzzle book using all pieces without overlap (and often without gaps)

This resource uses a puzzle which includes four interfitting pieces. Just copy, cut out, give to kids to crack the puzzles, and let the class consider how when all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
