Okay, here is the secret to helping your students practice fluency and LOVE it: Fluency Friday!
Every Friday in my classroom, 4-5 students read a book to the class and show off their fluency!
I give students a Fluency Check sheet on Monday, and it is their responsibility to practice reading and rereading one book all week. They read the book to themselves 3 times and check each box, read to a boy, read to a girl, and take the book home to read with their families. I also have them write down one tip they got from a friend or family member on how to make their reading even better (what type of voice they should use for a certain part, reading the punctuation at a certain part, reading faster or slower during part of the story, etc.) They show me their completed sheet before they read on Friday.
My students understand fluency and are excited to read and reread to build their fluency!
