This is a fun “anticipatory set” activity to introduce how things change and evolve through the years. Sit your class in a circle and scatter the phone photos in the center. Once they stop talking about how they want an iPhone 5 and who they know who has one, ask them to put the pictures in order. It is so much fun to listen to them work through it. They will notice that most phones have buttons but the first two didn’t. My second grade class took a few minutes to do this but got it exactly right. When they finished, I asked them what the first phones would have been used for. The conversation was amazing and spot on.
After we discussed it for a while I sent groups of 3 or 4 kids to research how other things have changed ...cars, computers, washing machines, airplanes, houses, sewing machines, clothes etc. They Googled their topic and created PowerPoints to share.
