Valentine Rhymes by Gail’s Reading Rubies
This product would be great for kindergarten, first grade, and home school. It can be used in a small intervention group (RTI, ESL, Special Education), in a literacy center, or individually. I made this to be used with a group of 6 kindergarteners, as a small group intervention, on teaching rhymes.
Preparation- Copy pages on cardstock for durability, laminate and cut apart. ( I made 2 covers) Decide how you intend to use product. If using as a literacy center, glue a cover on a manila envelope to be used in storing contents from year to year. Duplicate the Heart Page so each student has one, to work the puzzle rhymes on. Copy the Heart Rhyme Puzzle Pages one time.
Teaching Information-Begin by placing one heart page in the middle of the table. On the left side put the 4 left halves of the rhyming pictures. On the right side put the 4 right halves of the rhyming pictures. Then pick one of the left half pictures and place it on one of the blank hearts on the Heart Page. Next pick one right half picture and name both of the pictures to see if they both end alike or rhyme. Continue like this until all of the rhymes are matched. The next step would be to go through each of the 6 different rhyming pages and match the pairs. Finally, give each child his own Valentine Rhyme puzzles and blank Heart Page to build the pairs on. (Keep each puzzle page in individual baggies for organizational reasons.)
Optional Booklet Cover Craftivity- could be used as a coloring sheet and used as a cover for a student rhyming booklet. (The teacher would need to make as many copies on regular copy paper as needed for the class.) Duplicate the Heart Page at least six times per student. Students would cut and paste matching rhymes together on one of the hearts on the Heart Page. There are 6 different cut and paste Rhyming Pages. Differentiate by passing out one rhyme page at a time or make it harder and pass out 2 at once. After all 6 of the cut and paste pages are done, put them in a booklet and staple. Additionally, there are 2 assessment pages included to be used at the very end of the lessons. They could be placed in the booklet too if wanted. Students would have a craftivity on rhymes to take home. Happy Valentine’s Day!
