Description for full unit below!

Target the third tier of the language processing hierarchy with your older students using this associations unit!

The ability to recognize how words "go together" in a variety of ways is a building block for beginning to understand categories, attributes, and more. It is also a building block skill for Common Core Language standards addressing word relationships and nuance in meaning.

This unit was designed with older students in mind, using black & white text as stimuli without visual aids. A variety of activities are available, including sorting cards, worksheets, and task cards. Activities require both closed-ended answer and open-ended answers to target both expressive and receptive knowledge of object functions.

Included:

1 - Sort pairs of words by whether or not they go together

2 - Sort a variety of words by which object/noun word they are associated with

3 - Worksheets (5 of each)

-> Choose 2 words from an answer bank that go with the noun/object

-> Identify if a statement regarding two object's relationship is true or false

-> Complete a sentence by generating an associated word

4 - Story Activity

-> Given a sentence from the story, choose the word that should have been used

5 - Group Work

-> Choose an object word as a class. Each student draws a picture depicting it with its identifying attributes. Discuss as a class.

6 - Task Cards

-> Identify whether 2 words go together, generate a word that goes with a target object/noun, and state why/how 2 words go together

7 - Narrative Writing
