Common Core Secondary Math brings you “Fluent in Math: Fluency Checks for the Common Core”

The Common Core State Standards in Math (CCSSM) stress fluency with skills and procedures along with conceptual understanding and mathematical applications.

Fluency with mathematics at the secondary level requires the same repeated practice and feedback as multiplication facts did in elementary school, however, generating the required fluency checks takes time. Many middle and high school students still believe that as soon as you take a math test, you can purge the information from your brain. I created these fluency checks because I and my students needed them and I hope they can help you and your students.

What you will receive in the free version: One “ No-Prep” Linear Equations Fluency Check plus full answer key.

The full version contains 4 additional fluency checks in the same format with different problems.

To make grading easier, all of the answers are in slope-intercept form but students will need to be fluent with all forms in order to pass this check.

This version is fraction light, meaning that students need to know how to work with fractions but they are easy fractions. If you would like a version with more fractions, the full version has more fractions. At the beginning of the year, I want to see if they are fluent with the concepts and I don’t want the arithmetic to get in the way.

Common Core Standards:

• A.SSE.1a: Interpret parts of an expression.

• A.SSE.2: Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it.

• A.SSE.3 Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.

• 8. F.3: Interpret the equation of y=mx+b

Questions:

• Write the equation of a line containing two specific points.

• Write the equation of a line given a slope and y –intercept.

• Write the equation of a line given a point and a slope.

• Write the equation of a horizontal or vertical line given a point and a parallel or perpendicular line.

• Write the equation of a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line through a given point.

Answer Keys in two forms:

• Answers

• Worked Solutions

Suggestions for usage based on the nature of your class.
