About these lessons
The Fruit of the Spirit is a popular topic for children's Sunday school lessons. Go
online, and you'll find a lot of lessons and crafts with oranges and bananas
associated with the Fruit of the Spirit. But what does the word "fruit" really mean?
Fruitfulness is a biblical concept. Jesus used the imagery of good trees producing
good fruit and bad trees producing bad fruit in one of his parables (Luke 6:43). The
idea behind this imagery is not so much that "love" is a delicious fruit like an apple,
but that the Spirit plants seeds in our hearts and what grows is good fruit. The
Spirit makes us fruitful. Not only does the Spirit makes us fruitful, but ONLY the
Spirit has the power to make us truly loving, truly peaceful, and so forth.
I have chosen to use a cluster of grapes as our image of the Spirit's fruit in our lives.
Rather than producing lots of different fruits, I want kids to see a single plant that
produces bountifully! You'll also find that our Bible stories provide both good
examples and bad examples depending on whether or not a person is being
controlled by the Spirit. God bless your teaching; may it be fruitful!
