Included is 12 weeks worth of vocabulary activities, quizzes, and culminating tests using Sadlier-Oxford Level D half-units. (I have found that my students use their vocabulary words in their writing and assignments MUCH more when given half-units.) I personally use these for standard level English 1 (9th grade) students, but it can work for middle school as well.
Every unit folder includes three files:
1. Matching: I cut up the words and definitions and place them into plastic containers. Every Monday, students get into groups and grab a container. Using prior knowledge and educated guesses, they must match up the words and their definitions.
2. Sentences: After a certain period of time, students are given the sentences and re-match their words using context clues. I tell my students whether they have them all matched up correctly or not, but do not tell them which words are incorrect; they must use context clues. Once all of their words are matched up correctly (you check this), they write down the definitions on the back of their sentences.
3. Quizzes: There are three versions of quizzes. Versions A and B are the same, but in different order (to prevent cheating). Version C is a modified version for EC students with IEP accommodations.
There are also tests for every four units of vocabulary (~40 words).
My students love using Quizlet to study for their vocab quizzes every Friday. Please feel free to use www.quizlet.com/msantonacci for the English 1 vocabulary flash cards. (***I use TPT seller Laura Randazzo's vocabulary list and definitions for English 2; I DO NOT take credit for those vocabulary sets.***)
***CHECK THE SENTENCES BEFORE YOU PRINT! I like using my own name and friends' names in my sentences to make them more personal, so you can replace mine with yours or simply put random names in instead. (Or you can keep my crazy name in there!)***
