    Description

These four resources provide 120 kindergarten and first grade seasonal writing activities. Together, they incorporate three types of writing, including OPINION, INFORMATIVE, and NARRATIVE. Handwriting and beginning spelling skills are also addressed, as well as a child’s planning, sequencing, and creativity. Optional scissors activities are included to improve a child’s hand strength and bilateral (two-handed) skills, necessary for handwriting.

At the kindergarten and first grade level, children are not always ready to compose sentences independently. Scaffolding is one of the best ways to build a child’s skills. Start at the most simple writing tasks (copying) and scaffold to more challenging tasks as a child’s competency grows. Over time a child will become more independent with writing.

    How does this Resource Work:

1- First Children Copy the Prompts:

In each writing activity, children are provided a writing prompt to copy. Through copying, kids implicitly learn more about spelling and sentence composition. They also build their emerging handwriting skills.

    2- Encourage Creativity and Thinking:

Pictures associated with each writing prompt stimulate a child’s imagination.

3- Improve Handwriting Skills (as follows):

In this resource best-practice supports are offered to address a child’s handwriting.

    * 3 writing lines to guide proper letter formation

    * Adequate writing space and a gray, drop-down area for “fall letters”

    * A ”Starting Star”

    * Directions for correct letter formation strokes on “Word Writing Practice” pages

Because handwriting and spelling skills are important pre-requisites for writing, the following pages are offered to guide and scaffold children’s skill building. Make these pages available!

    WORD WRITING Practice:

Children practice writing and spelling common words included in this theme. These pages demonstrate the proper writing strokes to form the letters in each

    of these words.

    ALPHABET STRIPS:

Guides for proper letter formation are available. These can be laminated for children to practice and use. Two versions are available, with or without arrows, to demonstrate writing

    strokes for letters.

    SCISSORS SKILLS:

Decorate the writing pages by adding images. Scissors practice works on fine motor skill and hand strength, so important for handwriting. Plus, this activity addresses a child’s planning as he or she decides where to place images on the picture.
