Students make a "Current Catcher" to view convection first-hand!
In this fun addition to a heat and thermal energy unit, middle school students will need access to scissors, string, and a hot plate or another safe source of heat. They will make their own "Current Catcher" (cut from the worksheet itself), and experiment with holding it at different positions above the heat source. The "Current Catcher" moves with the convection currents from the heat source. There is also a small section with instructions using a pinwheel over the heat source. (We got a dozen pinwheels on Amazon for $4!)
