After hours researching and taking a graduate course on the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of homework and I am finally ready to get rid of the traditional homework in my classroom! However, I do see the value of homework promoting responsibility, giving students positive options for continuing their learning at home, and most of all, making sure our students are reading every night.
So, I give you my alternative--Funwork! Funwork not only promotes responsibility and reading but adds the facts that students need to be active and learn actual life skills. Everything I have put in Funwork was very purposefully picked after doing much research on skills all students need. HOWEVER, you can choose to use Funwork as the top page of a packet and include worksheets for students to do at home if you are not reading to get rid of homework or if you would just like to give parents the option of having work for their child to do at home.
I worked very hard to make this as inclusive as possible for all students because I know a lot of my students aren't able to go out and buy extra materials and/or don't always have someone helping them with their homework. I am aware that some students might not be able to do the active log because of physical constraints so that will be something the teacher will need to modify.
Here is the details:
-There are 36 weeks of Funwork, enough for the entire year
-Each week has a reading log for Monday-Friday as well as a Common Core aligned reading response/task (these repeat every 4 weeks)
-Each week has a active log for Monday-Friday as well as an active challenge (these repeat every 4 weeks)
-Each week has 3 activity options of things that support hands on/critical thinking/life skill/spending time with family/kindness/writing/math/science/music/art (these never repeat, each week is new except the last activity because they should always be discovering new places!)
If you choose to use this PLEASE let me know what you think and how it's going, I made this to use in my own classroom but I shared because I thought it is something that could be very beneficial for others and would love to see how it's working out!!
*Please let me know if you find any mistakes on this, it is quite possible I could have overlooked something! If you purchase this and need the editable version, just let me know. I also have a similar reading/activity log in my TPT store if you're looking for something more basic.
