In this assignment, students are asked to write an e-mail to an incoming French exchange student, who we pretend will be arriving this Friday. Included in this assignment are a checklist of necessary details that the student must include in his/her e-mail, some pertinent essential vocabulary, and a borrowed rubric that uses ACTFL descriptors. To this rubric I also added a final category, "Effort," with which you can assign a point value for the students' attention to detail and directions. My students found the assignment and formatting very easy to understand and execute correctly.
I personally did this as an in-class writing assignment. My fastest students French 2 finished in about 45-60 minutes, while my more deliberate students took about 60-80 minutes.
