This unit aligns perfectly with the Alberta First Grade Science curriculum. This unit is unlike the others in this series as it's a uniquely hands-on unit.

I taught first grade twice during my time with EPSB. Both times, I attempted to use the brown book to teach Building Things. Following steps to build pre-designed structures and objects within a short period of time proved to be an unattainable task for many of my students. I found myself feeling anxious and frustrated when they weren’t able to complete the tasks that I assigned. Building things should be FUN, not stressful.

This resource is my attempt to bring joy and meaningful learning back into Building Things. It encourages students to explore and build structures and objects at their own pace and ability level. Due to the hands-on nature of this topic, it is far less structured than my other Science units and is heavily influenced by the current “maker” and “STEM” trends.

The unit begins with a week-long “building challenge.” During this first week, students will select appropriate materials to design and build a variety of unique objects. The second week is more structured – students will be asked to follow steps to build certain kinds of shelters, vehicles, toys, and boats. During the third and final week, students will compare two objects that have been constructed for the same purpose and will learn to recognize those purposes.

OUTCOMES & ACTIVITIES:

1. Select appropriate materials to design and build objects, such as buildings, furniture, toys, and boats.

❌ Instructions for preparing for and organizing a four-day building challenge where your students will select materials to build unique objects.

2. Identify component parts of personally constructed objects, and describe the purpose of each part.

3. Compare two objects that have been constructed for the same purpose, identifying parts that correspond as well as similarities/differences
