Appeal to students' use of social media with this interactive character study! This works best when used with a novel with many very different characters (such as "The Westing Game").
I like to assign each student or small group one character from our novel, and they have to complete Page 1 using direct and indirect information the author gives us about the character. Then I post each Facebook "profile page" on a bulletin board, leaving room beneath to attach a blank Page 2. This is the character's "wall" where students are directed to stay in character and post greetings, responses, and conversations with one another based on plot twists and turns and/or actions that could be taking place behind-the-scenes. Staying in character is key!
This can be used throughout the reading of a novel, or afterwards as a more summative assessment of students' understanding of key characters, their motivations, personalities, and impact on the plot.
