Building a strong foundation of Number Sense in your students is key in their future success in math. Starting with the basics and illustrating how numbers can be related plays a key role in building Number Sense.
Fact Families-Building Houses are designed to illustrate to students that when you put smaller parts together you build a whole and that numbers are related (and bonded) like a family.
Included are number houses for 0 through 5. Also included are two manipulative mats as well as number bond practice pages. I make copies of the manipulative mats and have the one on the overhead. I use counting manipulatives to illustrate the number and move them to show how the number can be divided into two parts. You can also give each student manipulatives and a copy of the work mat so that they can follow along with you.
You can create a pattern with the facts you create or just generate them randomly until they have them all. I found it easier to teach them to move one manipulative each time so they created a pattern going down the house. This also teaches them to think in an organized way.
Common Core Standards
K.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
K.OA.2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
K.OA.3 asks students to understand that a set of (5) object can be broken into two sets (3 and 2) and still be the same total amount (5).
1.OA.3 Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.
1.OA.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.
1.OA.6 is strongly connected to all the standards in this domain. By studying patterns and relationships in addition facts and relating addition and subtraction, students build a foundation for fluency with addition and subtraction facts.
1.OA.8. Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers.
