Fact Families: Candy Jars PDF and Smartboard Version

This is a math center and teaching tool to teach related addition and subtraction facts or “fact families”. I have the students use dry erase markers or grease pencils. Ideally, you need plastic covers like a document cover or you can purchase pockets specifically designed for inserting papers to use with dry erase markers (a link is included for where to purchase them).

If you'd prefer not to use dry erase markers, have students write directly on the recording sheets.

This product contains:

12 mats, each with a picture of a jar containing two types of candy (2 parts) and a whole part part chart and four places for addition and subtraction sentences. See the preview for an example of a mat.

Directions on assembly and use

Recording sheets for each mat

Answer Keys for each mat

Center cover picture

Number of pages: 23 for the PDF (printable) and 12 Smartboard pages

I included a smartboard version of the candy jars to act as a good demonstration and teaching tool.

Thank you!

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
