This activity is related to CCSS 5th grade Math NBT.B.6.
This activity gets students solving two-digit by two-digit multiplication problems and division problems with three-digit dividends and two-digit divisors. The attached file has cards for up to 23 students and can be used to make 12 groups of partners, with the flexibility to have one group of three. Instructions are printed on each card. Students will find the student with the numbers that belong to their fact family, then work with their partner to make a word problem with the numbers they were given.
This is a great activity to get students out of their seats and talking about math. You can extend this activity to employ the math practices by having students explain the word problem they wrote and tell why they chose the wording they did. You could also make a graphic organizer of the words students used to tell about multiplication or division.
We keep math journals, so my students will also be writing their own unique word problems with the division sentence they were given, including drawing a model and explaining the standard algorithm for dividing by a two-digit divisor.
**Also, if you have more than 23 students but would like to use this product, let me know. I'd be glad to add some problems for you!
