Fact families are 3 numbers that are related, just like members of a family are related. The numbers can be added or subtracted, divided or multiplied together to show the relationship between numbers. The fact family house is an excellent way to show this relationship to your students. I’ve included a set of numbers for K-1 and a blank page for you to create more difficult families as needed. I’ve also included a sample of multiplication and division for older grades as well as an editable page.
- For the younger grades, we chant, “The biggest number always goes first” for subtraction and for addition we say, “The biggest number stands at the back.”
- I make copies of the fact families and put them on a clip board on the calendar wall.
- As students get better at this, you can put blank houses up and encourage them to create their own fact families.
