This is a new way to teach fact families. Students circle the biggest number or color it red and leave the smaller numbers or color them green. Students need to keep their fingers on the road. They stay on the road minding 2 rules: (1) If you are adding, start with the smaller numbers/ green numbers, and (2) If you are subtracting start with the largest/ red number.
It makes sure the students keep track of the number so that each one is used once in the fact family. (I kept having problems with students repeating numbers) Calling it a race makes it more fun for the students. It is the easiest way I came up with to teach fact families and my students really understand them now!!
