**UPDATED** This set has been expanded to include more fact sets!!
This is my new favorite resource for my second grade classroom! The Common Core has brought a shift in thinking about math facts. We are striving for deeper understanding, yet need students to be able to be automatic with their facts. So what to do?! My students can use many strategies to figure out their facts, but we’re now to the point where they need to know them automatically. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been told that the days of skill and drill are over. I fully believe in teaching students to fully understand numbers and build number sense. Yet I also fully believe that at some point, students need to be able to recall their facts fluently.
The fact fluency books allow students to move through different sets of facts through daily practice. Each day, they are timed for 90 seconds giving them about four seconds per fact. The fact booklet says one minute, but I always give the bonus 30 seconds. The facts are written with both addition and subtraction formats, as well as complete the missing addend format. This requires students to not only know their addition facts but the relationship with the complete fact family. Each day’s fact set is varied from the day before preventing students from simply memorizing the order of the answers. On the front of the booklet, students graph how many facts they got correct helping them to stay accountable for their growth, get excited for making gains, and it makes it easy for me to track progress as well.
For an added touch of accountability, there is a place for parents to sign. I send the booklet home on Fridays and students return them on Monday.
This booklet is made from one single piece of paper copied front and back. Fold the single sheet in half twice to achieve a booklet with one day per page.
To provide a little extra incentive and reward for mastering their facts, I put students’ pictures in the hall beside a header for each fact set. The headers are included!
If you think of other facts sets you would like to see, please send me a message or leave a note in your feedback. I’d be happy to expand this set.
