Description

Practice recognizing and sorting facts from opinions. After reading How to Survive as a Shark by Kristen Foote, discuss perspectives and how learning facts can change perspectives.

The activity is provided twice. Decide which format best meets your needs!

  1. Black and white sentence strips, a page labeled “facts” and “opinions”, and fact/opinions envelopes. The students can cut the sentence strips, glue the envelop edges (only the edges) to their pages, and then sort the sentences into the correct envelopes. See the image for an idea on the final products. Of course, students can also color as desired.
  2. Color cards and sorting pages. Use this option to make this activity into a center or group activity.

About the book: How to Survive as a Shark by Kristen Foote is an amusing and informative picture book about sharks. It is told from the perspective of a grown great white shark teaching newly born shark pups. Through the fictionalized lessons, the pups learn about great white shark life cycles, how they move, what they eat, and more.
