Factoring Out the Greatest Common Factor
This fun and humorous lesson will definitely help your students factor out the greatest common factor of a polynomial. The lesson opens up with a review of factors and factoring and then introduces the distributive property by using a rectangular model. Students will then use the distributive property with polynomials and see how factoring reverses the multiplication process. Students will continue to use this rectangular model to find the factored form of various polynomials. The lesson closes with 3 problems where students have to find and correct the errors, if any, of Joey Jr. Note: Joey made some errors on these three problems because he was up too late playing Madden Mobile and thus was not focused on his studies. Once students find Joey’s errors they get to correct them. If Joey made no errors, your students will simply write that Joey is a super genius. My students found this lesson humorous and engaging and they told me that the various hints, “free of charge”, and reference pages really helped them to have success with these difficult concepts.
