This is a flow chart used to help students identify what type of factoring to use when they come across a problem for the first time.
The four types highlighted in this flow chart are Great Common Factor, Reverse FOIL, Difference of Squares, and the Quadratic Formula (for when all else fails).
I utilize this on a daily basis as we go through the factoring unit. I will talk about the type we are on for that particular day. Then, when the unit is complete, the students are already familiar with the flow chart and can use it for the remainder of the review period. By the time the test rolls around, the students are so familiar with the flow chart that it becomes ingrained in their problem solving techniques with factoring.
