Factoring is such a basic skill that students need to master in order to successfully master other mathematical concepts. This activity is meant to give your students practice while keeping them engaged.
In a group setting, to practice factoring difference of two squares and trinomials with a leading coefficient of one. This is a great review tool before a quiz/test/EOC or as a filler activity. It’s a good idea to show the card on the board or smartboard for the rest of the class to follow as you play the game.
A deck of “I Have, Who Has” cards. It’s best to print them on cardstock, cut them out, and laminate them so that they’ll last you longer from year to year.
• Distribute ALL the cards in the deck to your students. There are 30 cards so if you have less than 30 students in class, some will have more than one card and if you have more than 30 students, some will have to share a card.
• There is no start or end card; pick the name of a student at random and he/she will read their card, “Who has…” (this will be the last person to answer “I have…”). The student who has the answer will read their entire card, “I have…, Who has…”
• The game ends when the first person who read their card says their answer in response to another student’s question.
• Alternately, give the cards to a student or small group of students that are having difficulty factoring to play as dominoes where they line up the cards in order.
