Notes for factoring a quadratic with an area model. These notes are simple and written in Cornell style. The example is color coded and animated to go with the steps. Take a look at my Notes for factoring quadratics with group. These notes are the same style but a little more animated.
The second file is a Smart Notebook that has an example of solving a quadratic function using a graph compared to factoring. It depicts the difficult of finding zeros that are decimals using a graph. The factoring is done by area model and each step appears when you click on it. I like to play a game with this doc asking students to give me an educated guess what the answer is using the graph and we see who is the closest after solving the problem.
I like using area models for teaching because it relates it more to finding missing sides and why the solution is two binomials.
